BIRDWATCHING

Bird watching is a relaxing and fascinating activity that can be practiced by children, young people and adults. It is one of the most appreciated hobbies in the world. It is estimated that today there are more than 80,000,000 practitioners. It really is a gratifying and engaging practice that generates great emotional well-being, relieving stress levels from day to day.

Birds are the group of vertebrates most widespread and visualized in nature, because they are colorful, attractive, interesting and charming. These attributes are not enough, many species sing abundantly, which has inspired the souls of artists enchanting generations of people.

Birdwatchers are also responsible for much of the knowledge gained about birdlife in many countries by accumulating photographs, video images and recordings of their songs. These activities assist the competent authorities in the management of their natural resources and promote local tourism.

Santa Catarina has three important biomes: Mata Atlântica, Araucaria forest and the southern fields. It is the third State of Brazil with more preserved areas, sheltering around 470 species of birds, some endemic and others threatened with extinction.

The Atlantic Forest is considered the second most biodiverse tropical forest in the world. It is present along the Brazilian Atlantic coast covering 17 States. Its fauna and flora today are a priority in conservation, with more than 1,020 bird species and around 20 thousand plant species. The purple-breasted parrot (Amazona vinacea), the black-billed toucans (Ramphastos vitellinus) and the green bump (Lophornis chalybeus) are some representatives of the rich avifauna.

The Araucaria forest is an important transition biome between the Atlantic forest and the southern fields. It is a humid subtropical forest, which the paraná pine (Araucaria angustifolia) dominates the arboreal landscape. Highly explored in the past today large fragments are highly prized existing many areas in regeneration. Thus, species such as the blue crow (Cyanocorax caeruleus), the parrot-charão (Amazona pretrei) and the caneleirinho (Piprites pileata) are again abundant.

Usually at an altitude of more than 1,200 m, the southern fields consist of extensive open areas with stony ground and grassy domain where arboreal vegetation is of short stature and superficial roots. With many lagoons and wetlands, they make this biome great for watching waterfowl. Black-necked swan (Cygnus melanchoriphus), black-headed mackerel (Heteronetta atricapilla), sanã-cinza (Porzana spiloptera) are species restricted to this biome in Brazil.

Preliminary Avifaunístico Survey of the Rio do Rastro Ecoresort, Bom Jardim da Serra - SC

October - 2009

Technical advice:
The present survey was carried out in Rio do Rastro Ecoresort, located at 1,400 meters above sea level in the Serra do Rio das Rastro, belonging to the Bom Jardim da Serra municipality, in the south of the State of Santa Catarina. The biome is of araucarias forest with stretches in regeneration.

Open trails were traversed within the forest and in open fields with grasses. With two field trips per day for a period of five days. One in the early morning and the other in the late afternoon. From the 20th to the 25th of October 2009.

The studied region is in good stage of forest regeneration, with stretches of primary forest, the presence of old xaxins indicates good health of the forest. This fact then provides a more varied diversity of birds. Demonstrated in the sighting of species that indicate a well preserved environment, such as the jaguar (Penelope obscura) and the southern-scaled (Lepidocolaptes falcinellus).

Bioma considered critically endangered because there are only about 3% of the original of 200 thousand Km². Important region where the Atlantic forest is partially replaced by plant formation whose main representative is the Brazilian pine tree (Araucaria augustifolia). It has specialized and restricted species to this biome as the wormhole (Leptasthenura setaria) and the grimperinho (Leptasthenura striolata).

This survey identified 67 species of birds. Most forest, that is, totally or partially dependent on the forest environment. And migrant species are returning from travel like the taperuçu-de-coleira (Streptoprocne zonaris) and the scissors (Tynannus savana). Taking into account previous photographic records made on the spot this number changes to 71.

With diverse and abundant birdlife and the presence of charismatic, rare and endangered species, as well as good accessibility and safety in its tracks and lookout point, the Rio do Rastro Ecoresort is able to explore the ecotourism of bird watching and international.
